COMMODORE'S MESSAGE

FROM THE HELM OF THE EASYRUDDER

Hello again,

There are a few items that will need to be touched on this month.  First of all I would like to thank everyone who either worked on or attended our Commodores Ball this year.  Even though it seems at times as if the club is spasmodically going in all directions at once, these events somehow are always completed in spectacular fashion.  I also need to mention that Pat and Cherie Richmond went above and beyond the call of duty by volunteering their boat for the Commodores Reception party.  So thanks again everyone.

Please do not forget to bring something to the November auction, our last couple of fund raisers have been a little lack luster, so we need to raise a few extra bucks.

Speaking of fund raisers, the Crab Feed is coming up in January and Nancy Knight has volunteered to run the raffle again, she will need some cool stuff to raffle off, so if you have something to spare, the club would sure appreciate the donations.

At the October meeting there were no new nominations for Bridge or Board Members, although Andy Gano volunteered for a board position if there was an opening.  We will be voting at the November General Meeting on the Boards recommendations for next year’s bridge and 2 year board members as follows:

Commodore:                 Tim Anderson

Vice Commodore:         Michele Guerra

Rear Commodore:         Pam Clark

Treasurer:                    Connie Nichols

Secretary:                     Pam Clark

Jr. Past Commodore:    Ken Jobin

Board Members:

     Joan McClure           1 year

     John Adamo             1 year

     Hilary Grenville         1 year

     Dean Seidel             2 years

     John Rawlings          2 years

The last thing to mention this month is that the Awards Banquet will be rolled into the December regular meeting.  If this seems a little silly to anyone then I just want you to know that over the last few years the turnout for the Awards Banquet has been so low that it no longer rates standing as a separate event. The Richmond’s have volunteered to make the December monthly meeting meal bigger and better than it usually is in order to give it that “banquet atmosphere”.  We certainly do appreciate the extra effort that they are putting in.

There is not much room left in this letter for my usual talking points.  Just remember to vote, and even if we end up in a socialist dung heap, the club still needs you for the November Auction.

Your 08 Commodore,

 Ken Jobin

VICE COMMODORE REPORT

The Commodore’s Ball was great.  Ken & his first mate Sharon danced together holding hands and she even gave Ken a kiss or was that GI Jobin and Barbie.  I want to thank all that was involved in the Commodores Ball especially Sharon Laramie for her great organization skills and all the great people who helped decorating making the 50th a hit.  And to Past Commodore Josh Boyd, a job well done.  I know a few of you were worried about the Ball and I hope all had fun and enjoyed themselves, the food was great.

We didn’t have a cruise for October and boy does Larry miss the boat, so were looking very forward to the Leftover Cruise in I hope we get a good turnout.  We have the multi room for the weekend.   Friday night is my and Larry’s anniversary so we are going to go to the Casino for dinner and a little fun, anyone is more than welcome to join us or just come and gamble.  We are going to have a shuttle pick us up at the Marina around 5 pm.

Carling has reserved slips for the Leftover Cruise there are 9, 40’ slips at $24 per night and 4, 30’ slips for $18 per night.  You need to call and pay for the 1st night 14 days before the cruise.  Port of Poulsbo phone #360-779-9905.

Don’t forget the food drive!  Larry say’s let’s get the Chevy full.  And the Christmas auction in November.

Michele Guerra

Vice Commodore

E-10 AND WINTERIZING YOUR BOAT

THE PROBLEM WITH ETHANOL FUEL:  PHASE SEPARATION

ALEXANDRIA, VA. Sept. 9, 2008 -- Ethanol-laden gasoline, dubbed "E-10" for its 10% ethanol content, is now commonplace at marina fuel docks across the country. However, as winter approaches and boaters lay up their vessels for the season, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) has some recommendations to ensure that spring commissioning will go smoothly. That's because E-10 can phase separate, or form two separate solutions in the gas tank - water and fuel - over a long winter storage period. Once this happens, the engine may not run and internal damage can occur.

BoatU.S. has these recommendations for storing boats fueled with E-10 this winter:

  • Top Off:  For boats with built-in gas tanks, stop at the fuel dock and top off the tank before you haul out, leaving it nearly full with just a little room for expansion. A tank that is almost full limits the flow of air into and out of the vent, which reduces the chance of fluctuating temperatures adding condensation (water) to the fuel, inviting phase separation. Anglers who fish over the winter should also top off their boat's gasoline tanks between outings to prevent condensation. Draining built-in fuel tanks of E-10 gas, while completely eliminating any chances of phase separation, is not practical and potentially dangerous.
  • Freshening doesn't work: Midwest marina owners, who have dealt with E-10 for many years, report that phase separation typically occurs when boats are stored with tanks only one-quarter to one-half full, which cannot be remedied by adding fresh gasoline in the spring. Once E-10 phase separates, the water will remain at the bottom of the tank.
  • Additive issues: With any fuel that sits in a tank for a long time, it's important to add a stabilizer. But stabilizers do not prevent phase separation. Once it occurs, additives and water separators can't help. The only remedy is to have the gas and ethanol/water professionally removed from the tank.
  • Fiberglass tanks beware: Ethanol is known to chemically react with many fiberglass fuel tanks, which can cause them to deteriorate and potentially fail. Unfortunately, unless your boat's manufacturer can confirm that your fiberglass tank was built to withstand ethanol, your only remedy may be to replace the tank with a non-reactive material such as aluminum.
  • Let it breathe: While ethanol does attract moisture, never try to plug up a fuel tank vent to prevent moist air from entering a tank. Without room to expand, the additional pressure could rupture fuel system components.
  • Portable gas tanks: Any un-mixed gas (without 2-cycle oil) remaining in portable tanks may be carefully poured into your automobile gas tank. However, if you do have to store gas over the winter in a portable tank, keep the tank out of the sun and in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, keeping in mind that gasoline fumes are heavier than air. Recent Boat U.S. Foundation tests of portable jerry jugs confirmed that over time, gasoline can evaporate through the walls of some plastic containers.
  • The good news: Next spring when you start the boating season you will already have a tank full of last year's gas, likely saving yourself some money on a fill up.
