COMMODORE’S REPORT Season’s Greetings from your 2012 Bridge!
It’s that time of year again! Shelley and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. For those of you coming to the New Years Cruise we look forward to seeing you there. Unfortunately we missed the Lighted Boat Parade for the 1st time in several years, but promise to be back next year with a new theme. I would also like to thank my Wonderful Wife for all her help this past year and those of you that helped me out as well, I never did make a good Vanna! I am looking forward to serving as Commodore this year and would like to thank Larry for the job he did last year. I hope 2012 brings lots of cheer and great cruising to all, Merry Christmas.

VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT
Well it’s that time of year again. Roses are red and violets are blue, Christmas is here and I'm broke again too. As I sit by the fire warming my buns I'm reminded by my wife that I'm supposed to have fun. Grandkids are coming as the weekend gets near. I'm looking for hiding spots so as not to be in fear. Packages are wrapped and the stockings are stuffed, maybe I'll surprise everyone and show up in the buff. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Don't forget The crab feed on January 21st - we still have many tickets left and are hoping for a sell out. Please contact me for your tickets 253-691-3259. I will not be at the next board or general meeting as the wife and I will be on a beach in Mexico. Sharon Jobin can help you with the purchase of more crab feed tickets during our absence.

REAR COMMODORE’S REPORT
Kelly and I just finished the lighted boat parade at Dock Street. It was great to see the other lighted up boats from Carling there, 6 boats in all. 3 boats participated in the parade, Steve and Pam on Mega Wacht, Ken and Sharon on King Pin, and Kelly and myself on Dawn Treader. During the parade, you could hear Past Commodore Pam Clark shouting from their PA system "Merry Christmas from Carling Yacht Club". Carling was represented proudly. This was so much fun! Perhaps we should consider making this an official cruise. The New Year’s cruise is fast approaching; December 30-January 2, I hope to see your smiling faces at Arabellas. The Sweet Hearts Cruise is February 10-12 at Dock Street Marina in Tacoma. I have reserved 10 slips for Carling, but please call Dock Street to reserve your slip at 253-572-2524. The location was changed from Port Orchard Yacht Club. We also need a chair person(s) for the Sweet Heart Cruise. Please contact me at 253-347-6067 or finncr4@comcast.net if you are interested in chairing this cruise. I will help you out in any way I can. I look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s cruises.

Cashew Cinnamon Brittle
What you need: Vegetable Oil, ½ c. water, 2 c. sugar, ¼ tsp light corn syrup, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tbsp unsalted butter, ¼ tsp. Cream of tartar, 2 c. roasted, salted cashew nuts, if using unsalted cashew nuts, add 1/8 tsp salt with the sugar, 1 tsp baking soda. Using vegetable oil, generously oil a sheet pan (preferably one with sides), at least 11x17 inches (or use a silpat).
In a medium – sized heavy saucepan, combine the water, sugar, cream of tartar and corn syrup and bring to a boil over medium heat. Using a candy thermometer to test it, boil the mixture until it reaches 350 degrees. Remove from the heat and working quickly, whisk in the cinnamon, then with a wooden spoon stir in the butter, cashews, and baking soda. Pour the mixture onto the oiled pan and spread it out with the wooden spoon, to about ¼ to ½ inch thickness. Don’t spread it too thinly. Let cool and harden, uncovered, 30 to 45 minutes. Using your hands, break the brittle into pieces. Store in an air tight container.
Submit your favorite recipe to Newsletter Editor Pam Clark – and we’ll make the recipe corner a tasty treat for all! pclark81860@earthlink.net

No Doubt About it… That’s THE DUCK”…
The
latest “Duck Recipient” is our very own Sharon Jobin.
Sharon was trying to tie down her lines at our recent left over’s cruise in
Poulsbo. Taking one quick tug and just one step backwards unexpectedly can be a
dangerous event, especially if not wearing proper life jackets or safety gear
even while docking your boat... Although it’s ironic that Karri Kollars duck
award will go down in the history books as the shortest lived duck award…
Sharon’s recent event brings a deep chill to my bones; invision being fully
clothed, winter gear, hat, gloves, winter boots, then falling into the depths…
trying to swim upwards with every effort, especially if you were not an avid
swimmer. These are the potential dangers which can happen to any of us - during
docking as well as play. For that reason, I’ve included information on Life
Jacket Safety in this month’s newsletter…
No matter how you slice it, almost any boating accident imaginable has a predictable outcome – you in the water fighting for your life. Unless you are wearing a life jacket, your survival chances are marginal. The best case scenario would be falling overboard without sustaining an injury, and being quickly recovered by a person remaining in the boat, or by a nearby boater. In almost every other scenario I can think, surviving a boating accident that resulted in being ejected from the boat without a life jacket would depend upon a quick rescue.
The latest boating safety statistics:
· In 2006 there were 4,967 boating accidents
· 3,474 of the boaters required medical attention beyond first aid
· 710 recreational boaters died
· 476 of the 710 boaters drowned
· 29 children under the age of 12 died
If those statistics don’t convince you to wear a life jacket, then consider these reasons to wear a life jacket while boating:
Capsizing and falls overboard are the most reported types of fatal accidents, comprising 59 percent of all boating fatalities. Nine of ten drowning victims may have survived a capsizing or fall overboard if they had been wearing a life jacket. By wearing a life jacket while boating, you increase the chances of surviving exponentially. Think of it another way: without a lifejacket, how long can you tread water while waiting for rescue? What if you were injured?
You cannot prevent an accident by your boating skill or experience alone. Boaters with more than 100 hours boating
Experience, who are 36 years or older and don’t have formal boating safety education are responsible for most of the boating accidents
and fatalities. Even if you have confidence in your boating skills, consider the many boaters who are less experienced and educated who
share the waterways with you…
